I watched a Ted Talk on how racism makes black people sick. This talk was presented by David Williams and he touched on many issues that we have covered in class. Mainly from a health equity and equality standpoint, we have discussed how a persons environment can contribute to a persons health outcomes. The reason I chose this is because not only do I work in healthcare and see how racism effects black health but I’m also a black male raising children and worried if I’ll be around.
This semester we have had numerous top ics discussing disparities between blacks and whites and Williams talk reflected with data to support how college educated blacks still have health outcomes worse than white high school drop outs.
This Ted Talk is an example of sociological theories we discussed surrounding healthcare system and minorities, racism and discrimination affect blacks health. From housing to education, disparities cause sickness.
In the end, people who are not black (even black People) need to realize like Williams suggest racism makes us sick and institutions have prevented us from visiting doctors because of the history that comes with it. If people can try our shoes on for a day, they would realize that being black means dying before you’re supposed to and then your fear may make you understand our issues with American Healthcare.

Hi,
I wanted to start off saying that I liked that you picked a topic that was close to you personally. I think that is how education really sinks in for people, when they choose a topic that is meaningful to them. I also agree that your topic of minorities and our chances of being sick is higher than whites and their outcomes. The health care system as an institution is in a way racist because of all the other environmental factors that minorities have to deal with. The TED does also correlate to the reading that we had “Racial Bias in Medicine Leads to Worse Care for Minorities”. It feels like that TED talk was basically going further into the health care system that the article described. I was wondering what then would be solutions to this racist problem the whole system of health care has?

Hi
I like how you picked a Ted Talk. I was having a hard time picking a type of media and now I realized a Ted Talk would have been a good thing to use. I was wondering where you work and if you see the same issues as what the Ted Talk talks about?

I love that you chose something visual like a TED talk, they’re my favorite to watch and are super entertaining. When I watched the video linked, I recognized how people of color are consistently discriminated against, but in such a discrete way. If I go an appointment with a therapist, share symptoms that *may* signal anxiety, I will automatically get categorized as another poc with anxiety/depression. Sometimes that’s the case, other times it’s completely not. We are diagnosed for things that are not even certain and it’s not fair. I understand what you mean by having children and wanting the best for you and yours as this game is clearly not in our favor… I don’t have children yet but when I do, I’d hate for them to be treated differently because of their background.
