Nurse Jackie

I watched an episode of Nurse Jackie called Nosebleed. The episode was multi layered but the illness in particular was very eye opening. A homeless person collapsed on the street that Jackie had treated before. He had diabetes and gangrene. The other nurses assisting Jackie were hesitant in helping him because he was dirty and they even made comments about him while he was being looked at. He was being judged because he was homeless and when Jackie asked the other nurse to check if he had stroke by touching his head, the nurse looked disgusted. Later in the episode Mr. Everett ends up having his leg cut off but Jackie is told that she dismissed him in an earlier visit because he was homeless. What this shows is that homeless people are not given the same care and are not treated as humans. The head of the hospital even make the statement that this a hospital not a shelter. The lack of compassion lead to this man having his leg amputated.

  1. Hi
I never seen the show Nurse Jackie but this episode seems pretty interesting. I really like how Jackie still helped out the homeless man. I feel like a lot of people wouldn’t take the time to help a homeless man because of the way he looks. I agree that homeless people are not treated the same people are so quick to judge. I feel like people should be welling to help one another no matter what.

    1. Thank you for sharing, Chauncey! This has brought so much perspective in just reading your post. I have never seen Nurse Jackie but I like shows like that. I also have seen Grey’s Anatomy to learn about different health problems and how doctors treat so many patients in one day. It’s interesting because I to have the same reaction to homeless people. When seeing them I do not want to touch them nor standby them on public transportation. Hearing the gentleman got his leg amputated because a nurse did not want to touch him was mind blowing. I wonder why they were speaking bad about him as if he is the first homeless person to come to the hospital for treatment. Their job is to take care of the sick and provide a service to the community. This was a humbling experience because the way that the cost of living is going in the bay area, we all are one step away from being homeless. No one is above anyone and we do not know what adversity he faced in life to get in that situation.

  3. Hello,
I enjoyed reading your blog post, it is crazy to think that people who are supposed to help you end up treating you that way. Even though this is just a show things like this happen all the time in hospitals I am sure. Homeless people are treated so bad and are never given the chance to better themselves especially when people treat them like this. We continue to feel so bad for homeless people but never do anything to help them out and think that they are homeless because it is their own fault when in many cases that is not true. Thanks!

  4. Hi
I have never seen that show but it does sound interesting. I think it is really unfortunate that they hesitated to help him just because he was homeless and dirty. As soon as people see something that they do not think is normal, they just hesitate to help them. The fact that the nurses were acting this way is un professional and for them to act like a hospital is not a shelter is just sad. Even though this is a show I would not be surprised if this actually happens and I wish it did not.
